The Hon’ble PM visits Kakrapar Atomic Power Project in Gujarat, dedicates to the nation two 700 MWe indigenous nuclear reactors, KAPP-3 and KAPP-4
Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi visited Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), on February 22, 2024, and dedicated KAPP-3 and KAPP-4, the two largest frontrunning nuclear reactors among the fleet of 700 MWe indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors of NPCIL, to the nation.
Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Prime Minister said that the role of nuclear power in electricity generation is going to increase in 21st century India, and it is a matter of pride that India is AtmaNirbhar in this advanced technology.
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel accompanied the PM during the visit.
Shri B. C. Pathak, CMD, NPCIL, briefed the guest dignitaries about India’s nuclear power programme and the salient features of the indigenous nuclear reactors.
Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, DAE & Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, underscored the significance of the event in advancing two critical visions propounded by the Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji: achieving net-zero emissions and fostering an AtmaNirbhar Bharat. He expressed satisfaction with the development and commended the dedication of the NPCIL team.
Shri Vivek Bhasin, Director, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Shri D. K. Shukla, Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), along with other senior officials of DAE and NPCIL, were also present on the occasion.
DAE is also pleased to announce a significant milestone in its pursuit of clean and sustainable energy. KAPP-4 has been synchronised with the western grid after due clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and is currently generating infirm power. The power level will be increased progressively to achieve full power, as per the regulatory clearances.
Dr. Mohanty said that KAPP-4’s synchronisation has come at an opportune time as DAE enters the Platinum Jubilee Year of Atomic Energy in India.
KAPP-4 is a twin of KAPP-3, which is in successful operation. The KAPP-4 had earlier achieved its First Criticality on December 17, 2023.
These indigenous reactors have advanced safety features and are among the safest reactors in the world. These reactors have been designed, constructed, commissioned, and operated by NPCIL, with the supply of equipment and execution of contracts by Indian industries and companies, reflecting the true spirit of AtmaNirbhar Bharat.
