Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI), a Government of India Enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) organised an “Industry Partnership Conclave for Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) Expansion at Mahabalipuram, Chennai on 19th June, 2026. The high-level event brought together senior representatives from leading public and private sector industries associated with the Indian nuclear power programme.
The conclave opened with an inaugural session led by Mr. P. A. Suresh Babu, CMD of BHAVINI. He expressed deep gratitude to the industrial partners for their exceptional contributions to the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), which recently achieved criticality and the achievement of PFBR criticality marks a defining moment in India’s nuclear energy journey. Built through indigenous design, engineering and construction, the project embodies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The PFBR stands as a shining example of India’s technological prowess and commitment to the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
As India advances toward the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, expanding the FBR programme will play a vital role in ensuring sustainable development and making the best use of the nation’s nuclear fuel resources. Industry leaders renewed their commitment to support the national objective of achieving clean, reliable and sustainable nuclear power for Net Zero 2070.
The technical and interactive sessions provided a platform for intense brainstorming. Participants held extensive discussions on several key areas like Capacity expansion, Indigenisation, Supply chain & Quality and Long-Term Participation. The participants also noted that India’s expanding nuclear power programme is well-supported by progressive policy initiatives and a strong regulatory framework.
The industry widely welcomed the act as a significant step forward. It strengthens the nuclear safety governance framework, boosts stakeholder confidence and paves the way for the sustainable growth of the nuclear sector. The conclave concluded on a highly positive note.
