Apsara–U reactor operationalised at BARC, Mumbai

Apsara-upgraded or Apsara-U, the indigenously developed pool-type research reactor, has been operationalised at BARC, Mumbai. This development strengthens research in nuclear physics, material science and radiation shielding, and augments the capacity for producing radioisotopes for medical applications.

The new reactor is named after the first research reactor of Asia, the original Apsara, commissioned at Trombay in 1956. After more than five decades of dedicated service to the researchers, the reactor was discontinued in 2009. Carrying the legacy forward, Apsara-U promises to continue harnessing nuclear power for the benefit of mankind.
